Launch Date – Two dates for your diary this week: The Department for Education Sustainability & Climate Change Strategy launch, Thursday 21st and Earth Day Friday 22nd. There’s likely to be a good turn out for the DfE launch and there is much speculation about what the strategy will (and will not) say. Here’s a view from our Chair.

Tendering to the DfE – The Department for Education [DfE] is looking for an experienced high-profile supplier(s) to launch the National Education Nature Park and Climate Leaders Award (NP/CLA). The Sustainability and Climate Change Unit has published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) on Contracts Finder and Find A Tender Service. It is looking for a supplier / suppliers who have the necessary expertise and profile to develop a world-leading programme designed to increase biodiversity in the education estate, and increase the knowledge and skills of children and young people in sustainability and climate change.

Rapid Evidence Review – DfE has distributed copies of the London Natural History Museum’s Rapid Evidence Review on the National Education Nature Park and Climate Leaders Award. This was commissioned to support the development of the Park and Award. If you’ve not got a copy and would like one, email DFE.SUSTAINABILITY@education.gov.uk with NP/CLA Engagement – NHM RER in the subject line. The review is 254 pages long.

One School at a Time – David Dixon’s new book, Leadership for Sustainability: Saving the planet one school at a time, has now been published by Crown House Publishing. We’ll be reviewing this in the neat future.

Re-Purposing Universities for Sustainable Human Progress – Frontiers in Sustainability, a research -focused book on ‘re-purposing universities’ has now been published on-line. Here’s the editorial, and a chapter by Stephen Sterling on Concern, Conception and Consequence: re-thinking the paradigm of higher education in dangerous times. Trichomonosis – The UK’s greenfinch population shows signs of recovery after a recent crash. The average number of greenfinches in the RSPB’s 2022 Big Garden Birdwatch increased by 8%, following a steep decline in the population since 1993 because of the parasitic disease trichomonosis.

IPCC 6.3 – The last installment of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report was released last week. This Solutions Piece sets out a plan to reduce emissions to keep global heating below 2°C.
