Global Action – FEE, the Foundation for Environmental Education, invites schools that are part of the Eco-Schools, LEAF and YRE Network to join in the Global Action day programmes running from April 22nd to May 3rd, 2024.

Climate & Biodiversity Projects –  Primary and secondary schools in the UK can apply for grants of up to £3,000 from The Royal Society to support projects and activities aimed at addressing climate change and biodiversity issues.

Embedding Sustainability – A reminder that the Harmony Project has a new booklet – Embedding sustainability in schools – which is aimed at primary teachers and leaders.  This outlines children’s progression in expertise and skills across six key sustainability themes: Energy & Climate Change, Biodiversity, Food & Farming, Cycles & Waste, Health & Wellbeing, and Adaptation for the Future.

Strategic Priorities – In her latest blog, Emma Knights, the National Governance Association’s Co-Chief Executive, discusses why there’s a need to make climate change and sustainability a governance priority for 2024. She says that if you are one of the remaining third of schools who have not yet taken action, the NGA has lots of relevant resources, adding that there are many others across the education sector, in universities and the green sector who are ready to support your school and trust leadership.

Fire Weather – BBC Radio 4 has dramatized John Vaillant’s story of the 2016 Fort McMurray disaster which drove 90,000 Canadians from their homes in a single afternoon.  Vaillant explores the past and the future of what he describes as our ever-hotter, more flammable world.  He delves into the intertwined histories of the oil industry and climate science, the unprecedented devastation wrought by modern wildfires, and the lives forever changed by these disasters.

Capture and ? – The Economist has a special report on CO2 removal which it says is vital to climate stabilisation, remarkably challenging and systematically ignored.

Net Gain – All major housing developments in England are now required to deliver at least a 10% benefit for nature.  With this, England becomes the first country to make Biodiversity Net Gain a legal requirement.  Climate Action has the details.  

In an article for The Conversation, Natalie Duffus and Sophus zu Ermgassen, University of Oxford explore these issues saying that the new policy is ambitious, but there are flaws and loopholes.
