Avonbourne Multi-Academy Trust in Bournemouth has
opened its new primary school – the UK’s first Earth Charter school.
Avonwood Primary was opened by Dame Kay Davies and has its own purpose-built science lab. As an Earth Charter school, Avonwood sets out to embeds the principles of this Rio-based organisation (tolerance and peace, sustainability and democracy) into its curriculum. Fittingly, Bournemouth Borough Council was the first UK council to become an Earth Charter local authority.
Dame Kay said:
“It was an honour to be invited to open this wonderful school building. The facilities are second to none and for primary school aged children to have their own science laboratory is just fantastic. If we can get very young children to discover the wonders of science from the outset of their education then we are more likely to nurture the scientists of the future.”
We think it’s great to see this sort of development, and look forward to seeing how its work progresses. We also look forward to the second Earth Charter school, and the third, and to other schools determined to take on the challenges of the world, instead of pretending that all’s well ‘out there’.
