The idea of using off-sets to counter the emission of carbon dioxide is a controversial topic. It used to be fashionable, for example, to pay a few pounds every time you got on a plane for someone to plant some trees somewhere to absorb all that CO2 on your behalf. It was always hard to verify whether any trees were planted, and whether much CO2 got absorbed, and it’s easy to see why this practice caused a great deal of scepticism. Nevertheless, in theory at least, there might be something in this. It is something that schools might at least talk about.

The SHED-SHARE Jiscmail group recently had an exchange about this and a few sources were put forward as good examples of where up to date ideas might be found. These included:

Carbon Brief

The Woodland Carbon Code

A Nature blog

Other possible sources are:

The Environment Agency

Ecologi

The Guardian
