The USA has signed up to the Paris Agreement, but doing what it has pledged will be hard work – as it will be in the UK.
For anyone teaching about all this, the Washington Post has produced some great graphics which you will find here. These show how each State generated its electricity in 2015 – and where the generating plants are. For example, solar power accounted for 1% of the total and wind 5%. Meanwhile, coal produced 34%.
Just how the USA is going to shift from this position to a carbon-neutral one is anyone’s guess. In the UK, we have a different mix of sources, but the same problem. The heart of the dilemma is that it is not possible to fix this problem just by building renewable sources, although not everyone understand that.
Great teaching topic though.
